Five Long-lasting dog chews

If you’re looking to keep your dog entertained, challenged and happily chewing for longer, you’ll want to look at the tougher end of the chew spectrum. At Be More Bob there’s a broad selection of natural chews and treats, and here we’ve pulled out five of the hardest, longest-lasting dog chews that are well worth considering.

1. JR Pet Products Ostrich Knuckle

This is a serious chew. According to the manufacturer: “100% air-dried bone with a unique crunchy and chewy structure… with marrow” and it is positioned as a long-lasting dental chew. Shop here

Because it’s bone (from ostrich) it offers a very firm texture. Ideal for strong chewers, but as with all hard bones, you’ll want to supervise your dog and make sure they can safely handle the size and hardness.

2. JR Pet Products Natural Beef Feet

These “Natural Beef Feet” (100% beef shin) are intended for larger breeds and aggressive chewers.

Because of their size, hardness and chew-time, they’re great when you want something that will hold a dog’s attention for a lengthy session. Shop here

3. Green & Wild’s Ox Jerky Chews

“Ox Jerky Chews” from Green & Wild’s are a wholesome, natural chews with longer life-span. While perhaps not as structurally hard as raw bone, jerky from ox with a thicker or tougher cut & chew interpretation offers relatively long chewing time compared to soft treats. Shop

4. JR Pet Products Braided Paddywack (15 cm)

Paddywack is tendon material which tends to be tougher and longer-lasting than many soft treats. The 15cm size is moderate but for a strong chewer can offer a good chew session. Shop here

5. JR Pet Braided Lamb

Hypoallergenic so perfect for dogs that are sensitive to beef or pork, these yummy treats are ideal for training or as a snack. Safe and highly digestible, the braided design takes longer to chew through making these a favourite with our customers. Shop here

🦴 Choosing & Using Hard Chews: Key Tips

  • Match size & strength: A chew that is too big/hard might pose a risk for smaller dogs or those with weaker jaws. Some dogs just give up if the chew is too hard.

  • Supervise chewing: Especially with dense bones or large chews, always supervise to avoid choking or large fragment swallowing. NEVER leave your dog alone with a chew.

  • Monitor wear: If a chew becomes small enough to swallow or breaks into shards, remove it.

  • Provide fresh water: It’s important dogs have water available when chewing hard chews.

  • Chew time vs treat: The aim of a “hard chew” is to provide extended chewing, mental enrichment and dental benefit, not just quick consumption.

  • Digestibility & safety: Natural chews are great, but ensure your dog tolerates them and doesn’t have dental issues. Some bone chews may not be suitable for dogs with certain dental conditions.

Why Go Hard?

Hard chews serve multiple purposes beyond just “giving something to the dog”. Here are a few benefits:

  • Dental cleaning: The abrasive action on teeth helps reduce plaque/tartar build-up.

  • Mental enrichment: Extended chewing engages dogs, expending energy and reducing boredom.

  • Jaw and muscle work: Stronger chews require more effort, which can be good for dogs with a high drive to chew.

  • Long-lasting: Saves you from having to give multiple quick treats; one might last a session.
