The Front Range FLEX is worth considering if you want the everyday comfort of the Front Range with a more flexible construction.

It's particularly useful for active dogs who move a lot during walks or for any dogs that have certain lumps or bumps that can be irritated by a harness. It's made from woven material, so feels like a knitted garment (it's still super durable though)

Border Terriers are clever, determined dogs, and some are surprisingly good at finding ways out of equipment that isn't fitted properly.

The Flagline has multiple points of adjustment and an additional strap around the body, creating a much more secure fit than a conventional two-strap harness.

What Size Ruffwear Harness Does a Border Terrier Need?

This is one of the most important questions we get asked.

A typical adult Border Terrier will often fit a Ruffwear XS, although puppies and larger individuals may fall outside this range.

Ruffwear XS covers a 43–56 cm chest girth.

85% of the Border Terriers we help are size XS.

But don't buy based on breed alone!

Border Terriers vary considerably in size and body shape and if you have a small bitch, a puppy or a particularly large dog, you may find your BT measures either side.

Always measure your individual dog before ordering, or send us the measurement and we will confirm for you.

How to Measure Your Border Terrier

To measure your Border Terrier for a Ruffwear harness, take a soft tape measure and measure around the widest part of the rib cage, immediately behind the front legs.

Your dog should be standing naturally while you measure, not sitting down, laying down or slumped!

Don't pull the tape tightly against the body, but don't leave it loose either.

Remember:

Chest measurement matters more than weight.

Don't assume that because your Border Terrier is a small dog they automatically need an XS. Measuring takes less than a minute and can save you from ordering the wrong size.

Common Border Terrier Harness Mistakes

We've seen plenty of harness-fitting mistakes over the years. These are some of the most common.

❌ Choosing a size based on a guess

It's too inconvenient to guess - if you get it wrong it will cost you time and money to swamp it out. Measure and you'll get it correct first time.

❌ Assuming every small dog needs an XS (although the large majority of BTs fit an XS)

Small doesn't necessarily mean the same chest measurement, it's always worth checking.

❌ Leaving the harness too loose

This is probably the biggest mistake we see.

A harness should be snug but not tight, without rubbing behind the front legs or restricting movement.

A loose harness is uncomfortable and unsafe.

❌ Buying too large so your puppy can grow into it

It can be tempting to buy a larger harness for a growing Border Terrier puppy.

However, a harness that's too loose isn't going to provide the security or fit you need.

❌ Forgetting to check the fit after grooming

If your Border Terrier has been clipped or stripped, their coat can change the fit of their harness.

Always check the straps again after grooming and tighten up/loosen as necessary.

Are Ruffwear Harnesses Good for Border Terriers That Pull?

Yes.

For a Border Terrier that pulls, we'd generally recommend looking at the Front Range.

This harness has a front and rear lead attachment option, which will help train your dog not to pull - NO HARNESS from any brand will stop your dog from pulling (don't believe the hype), but a good fitting harness will greatly increase your comfortable control, and allow you to work on training your dog to walk nicely.

It's important to remember that a harness doesn't train a dog not to pull. YOU train your dog not to pull.

The harness is equipment. Loose-lead walking still requires training and consistency.

A front attachment point can be useful as part of that training, but positive reinforcement and good walking habits are still the key.

What About a Border Terrier That Can Escape From Harnesses?

This is where we'd consider the Ruffwear Flagline or Web Master.

Both offer a more secure design than a conventional harness.

The Flagline is particularly appealing if you want something relatively lightweight for everyday adventures, while the Web Master provides a more substantial, supportive design.

For a Border Terrier who has repeatedly backed out of conventional harnesses, we'd always recommend getting the fit checked carefully rather than simply buying a bigger size.

However, we have found that most Border Terrier's fit a Front Range well and it will be difficult enough for them to get out of this style of harness.

For a Border Terrier puppy, the Hi & Light and Front Range FLEX can be a great option because they are available in very small sizes.

The most important thing is to measure regularly as your puppy grows.

Don't assume the harness will remain the correct size throughout puppyhood.

Check the fit regularly, particularly after periods of rapid growth.
